Clients ask us the same question all the time: does paying more for a better ingredient actually make a difference, or do consumers only look at price?
Rather than argue the theory, it's more useful to look at a real product.
HEIGHT+, a children's bone and growth formula from the local brand BOOSTER+, is built around Bonepep, a Japanese patented egg yolk peptide. With the right marketing behind it, the product has become a runaway seller in a crowded category.
In a category dominated by generic calcium tablets and relentless price competition, that result is worth unpacking. All product data cited below comes from the brand's own site and public retail listings.
BOOSTER+ HEIGHT+ Bone & Growth Nutrition Formula is made in Hong Kong: 60 tablets per box, one tablet a day, positioned as bone nutrition for children and teenagers in their growing years.
It retails at HK$450 per box, with 3-, 6- and 12-box bundles (the 12-box pack includes a free box). That sits at the upper end of the children's bone nutrition market. It still moves.
HEIGHT+ doesn't call itself a calcium tablet. The formula is built around five angles that matter during the growing years: bone formation, calcium absorption, calcium utilisation, structural strength, and growth vitality.
Per tablet:
IngredientPer tabletRole
Bonepep® (Japanese patented egg yolk peptide) 100 mg for Bone formation
K2VITAL® (German patented vitamin K2, MK-7) 30 mcg for Calcium utilisation
CBP colostrum basic protein 25 mg for Calcium absorption
Calcium citrate 75 mg for Bone building material
Collagen peptide 80 mg for Structural strength
L-arginine 40 mg for Growth vitality
L-lysine 40 mg for Growth vitality
L-ornithine 20 mg for Growth vitality
Zinc 5 mg for Normal growth and development
Boron 1 mg for Bone mineral metabolism
Vitamin D3 12.5 mcg (500 IU) for Calcium absorption
Bonepep® and K2VITAL® are Japanese and German patented ingredients respectively, and together they carry the brand's central message: dual-patent science.
Bonepep® is developed by Pharma Foods International Co., Ltd. in Japan. It is an egg yolk peptide (bone peptide, BP) produced by enzymatic hydrolysis of the water-soluble fraction of defatted egg yolk. The ingredient is also listed in ACC Biotech's patented ingredient catalogue.
Key ingredient data:
The above reflects cell and animal research, provided as formulation reference for brand owners and industry.
Do the arithmetic.
Bonepep®'s suggested effective dose is around 2 mg/kg. For a 30 kg primary school child, that works out to roughly 60 mg. HEIGHT+ delivers 100 mg per tablet — enough to cover a teenager of around 50 kg.
That is not a given in this industry. Plenty of products print a patented ingredient name across the front of the box, only for the panel on the back to reveal 10 mg inside. The ingredient is there to be named, not to work.
Consumers may not read dosages. But the decision shows up elsewhere: in repeat purchase rates, in word of mouth, in whether a KOL keeps promoting the product past the first paid post. Dose an ingredient properly and the product has a chance to produce a real experience. A real experience is what marketing compounds on.
Choosing the right ingredient is step one. Using enough of it is step two. A lot of brands stop after step one.
Four things stand out.
When a parent compares children's bone products, the panels look nearly identical: calcium, D3, maybe some magnesium and zinc. One reviewer on the brand's product page put it plainly — he spent weeks comparing labels and chose HEIGHT+ specifically for the Bonepep® and K2VITAL® dual-patent combination.
A patented ingredient turns a product that can't be compared into one that can be compared, and wins the comparison.
Patented ingredients give ad copy, KOL content and product pages real substance: research data, country of origin, patent status, mechanism, dosing rationale. A product with no ingredient story has nothing left to compete on but discounts.
HK$450 is a hard sell for a formula containing only calcium and D3. With two patented ingredients and eleven actives in the tablet, the price has an explanation.
And it compounds: a healthy margin is what funds sustained media spend, and sustained media spend is what builds volume. Money saved on ingredient cost tends to get spent again on discounting — usually more of it.
Alongside its own brand site, HEIGHT+ is stocked on an established local supplement retail platform. What a new brand lacks most is trust, and borrowing an existing audience is far faster than building traffic from zero.
A good product needs good distribution. Both halves have to be done.
If the four points above compress into one sentence: winning on the ingredient panel is easier than winning on price, and it actually makes money.
Price wars have no finish line. A product built on the right ingredient at the right dose holds a position competitors can't copy quickly — because patented ingredients come with a supply barrier of their own.
